How to Evaluate Objectivity/DB on the GoGrid Cloud and Hybrid Hosting Platform

Objectivity/DB is available on GoGrid via two Linux-based Cloud Server Images (CSIs) with bundled software for both 32 and 64 bit platforms. Both are based on the CentOS 5.2 operating system, a bit-compatible version of RedHat Enterprise Linux. Each is pre-installed with the core Objectivity/DB kernel as well as samples in C++, Java and Python.

Instructions

The information that follows is an abridged set of instructions for using the Objectivity/DB images within the GoGrid environment. If you are new to the GoGrid Cloud Computing environment, please refer to the Getting Started guide first. This, along with other documentation, including FAQ, forums and How-Tos can be found on the GoGrid Wiki site.

To begin using Objectivity/DB within the GoGrid environment, login to your GoGrid Cloud Hosting account. If you do not have an account, please visit the sign up page first.

The Grid tab is used to view the components of your cloud environment; Load Balancers, Web/Application Server, Database Servers and Storage. To add an Objectivity/DB server instance to your environment, you will create a Web/App Server instance.

  1. Click the Add button in the upper left corner and choose 'Web/App Server'
  2. In the dialog that appears select the entry containing the image of Objectivity you wish to use. Your choices are:
    1. Objectivity R9.4.1 CentOS 5.2 (32-bit)
    2. Objectivity R9.4.1 CentOS 5.2 (64 bit)
  3. Click Next to continue.
  4. In the screen that follows you will be able to provide details for your new image instance including:
    1. Server Name
    2. Description
    3. Public IP Address - see available from Network section in left side of portal page.
    4. Amount of RAM to use
  5. Click Save to continue.
  6. You will return to the portal page and an icon will appear to show a new image has been created. A Yellow dot in the upper right of the icon indicates the image is being created. This icon will change to show a Red dot once the image is ready for use.
  7. Click the image icon to show a list of action buttons in the left edge of the portal page. Along with Add, it will now show:
    1. Start (to start the image and attach it to your cloud environment)
    2. Tools (to get to the passwords page which lists the password used to login as root on the image)
    3. Delete (to delete the image)
  8. Click the Start button to launch the new image and attach it to your environment. This action will take a few minutes to complete. Once the image is started, the icon on the portal page will change to show a green dot in the upper right corner. At this point, the image is ready for use.
  9. To connect to the image, open a shell and run an SSH client using the password assigned to the root user. (e.g. ssh root@<public IP address>) The password is found by clicking the image icon and selecting Tools > Passwords. The page that follows lists all passwords assigned to the images and cloud storage components in your environment.

Notes

  1. In The GoGrid Cloud Server Image, the core Objectivity/DB files are located under: /opt/objectivity/9.4.1/*, where * refers to either linux86gcc3 for 32-bit images or linux86_64 for 64-bit images. The sample folders and files are located in the home folder of the objy user account on the image (password: objy4cloud).
  2. You must obtain a valid license key from Objectivity Support prior to using the software or running the sample applications. This license key should be installed under the folder where the core Objectivity components are located. See note above for location details.

    To obtain an Objectivity/DB license:
    • Go here: https://download.objectivity.com/
    • Click the "Register" button and follow the instructions (a valid email address will be required). Note: Be sure to select the "License for GoGrid Cloud Platform" option on the registration page.
    • Upon successfully completed registration, the license file will be immediately sent to the email address you provided.

Note: To ensure our messages reach your inbox, you may need to add our addresses ("license@objectivity.com" and "customer-contact@objectivity.com") to your allowed senders or email white-lists.
  3. The physical Objectivity Federation and DB files can either be placed on the local drive space assigned to the image or within GoGrid's Cloud Storage. Please refer to the following documentation for preparing your image to use the latter.
  4. Please consult the Objectivity/DB product documentation for more information.
