Data Firehoses In, Best Response Out

When things change, having the perfect response at your fingertips can be every bit as good as avoiding the change in the first place. That’s why you create software (often software that lives inside complex hardware) to monitor what’s going on, analyze that information, and give a succinct picture of what needs to be done. Of course, the data coming in is anything but simple. Your software needs to be able to interpret subtle changes and complicated interrelationships in a lot of finicky information, so that your operators or analysts can know what to do, right now, to optimize your processes in the moment, or to avoid undesirable complications down the road.

Objectivity/DB lets you analyze faster and more accurately, turning raw data into intelligence you can act on. With the innovative data management of Objectivity/DB, your systems do a better job of taking in data, comparing them to your critical benchmarks, and generating responses, all in real time.

Your software applications have never been this productive, this accurate or this fast, and Objectivity/DB is the enabler. Objectivity/DB pushes the performance boundaries of data management to the highest level, bar none. The more complex your data, the more Objectivity/DB shines, outperforming other systems by up to 1,000 times.

And with unmatched scalability, and the ability to have multiple users adding, changing and accessing data at multiple locations, this technology keeps you at the leading edge, no matter what trails you blaze tomorrow.

Objectivity/DB has already enabled data-intensive businesses to reach new heights:

BUSINESS RATIONALE

For collecting, processing and correlating event data in order to provide the most precise optimization of a system, Objectivity/DB is the most effective data platform available. Objectivity/DB outperforms all other database management systems in its ability to scale without loss of performance, and to manage complex data in a real time environment.

Manufacturing, Process Control & Automation

Not everyone needs the highest performance and most exacting precision from their processes. And not everyone is a leader in their field. For those who are, Objectivity/DB is the enabler.

With the world’s most sophisticated data management system at your command, your streaming data becomes real-time predictive intelligence, alerting you to process errors or equipment problems before they even occur. For data streams that come from multiple sources and varied locations, there is no more advanced tool, period.

Objectivity/DB ingests data faster, and processes it with greater speed and precision. It has already allowed leaders in automated manufacturing to raise the bar on what performance is possible.

With Objectivity/DB you can:

  • optimize your processes by capturing, monitoring and isolating data with the highest level of precision
  • handle with ease data from many sources, in real-time and unify that data among different application products and suites

The Challenge:
For Metso Automation, already a leader in automation and flow control technology, it was time for a new era of process automation. As the company developed metsoDNA (Dynamic Network of Applications) to provide process, machine, quality and drive controls as well as information management applications, the project hinged on the power of the right DBMS.

MetsoDNA would require scalability, distribution, and ultra-reliable performance, among other criteria.

The Objectivity/DB Solution:
MetsoDNA deployed Objectivity/DB in 2002. "Objectivity's distribution, reliability and performance provides our customers with the ability to visualize an entire plant as a hierarchical map," says Jaakko Oksanen, product manager for metsoDNA. "This enables easy navigation to the desired process area and bottom-level function blocks and parameters. We've had huge success with metsoDNA among our customers."

With Objectivity/DB in its arsenal, metsoDNA networks all automation and information activities from field to office, enhancing decision-making abilities for manufacturing plants. It increases a plant's engineering and maintenance productivity, and ensures quality design, allows efficient changes, and provides the highest degree of reliability to the automation and information networks through their complete lifecycle.

The scalability and distributed architecture of Objectivity/DB, as well as tests and benchmarks in which Objectivity/DB routinely outperforms all other DBMS by as much as 1,000 times, made it the obvious solution to help metsoDNA achieve its goals.

SEIMENS BUILDING TECHNOLOGIES

Click here to download the Siemens Success Story (PDF)

The Challenge:
Building control systems have traditionally managed heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC). Siemens Building Technologies, an industry leader, envisioned a greater sophistication: why not build a control system that would co-ordinate all these variables, as well as monitor building humidity, fire alarms, door locks, security, lighting and other building features, all while collecting historical data and storing network configuration information?

Adding to the complexity, such a system would have to be scalable, for projects ranging from small, individual buildings to entire college campuses with a variety of building sizes.

APOGEE, as the new system would come to be called, would have substantial database demands. In addition, programmers needed a seamless integration with a system developed in C++.

The Objectivity/DB Solution:
Siemens determined that data collected from APOGEE was better suited for the object paradigm, and the integration with C++ ruled out a relational database with an object-oriented front end. But which ODBMS to choose? Objectivity/DB was the leader, both in its inherent superiority to other ODBMSs and the support offered by the Objectivity organization.

"We evaluated several object database vendors and found that Objectivity had the best solution for our application," says Joe Studzinski, Director of APOGEE Engineering. "Objectivity/DB provided the distributed architecture and reliability that we required. Plus, Objectivity worked closely with our development team to ensure APOGEE deployed successfully."

The Challenge:
NEC operates 16 wafer fabrication plants around the world, and needed a manufacturing control system to manage, monitor and co-ordinate processes in this distributed manufacturing environment.

NEC’s high standards for product and process made 24/7 production, precision and high performance absolute necessities, and the geographical spread of the plants would obviously demand full distribution.

The Objectivity/DB Solution:
Using Objectivity/DB, NEC built O3, the industry's most advanced computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) system built exclusively with pure object technologies.

Why Objectivity/DB? NEC selected Objectivity/DB because of its ability to represent and maintain complex lot relations, and to ensure consistently high performance under high-density read and update transactions. Objectivity/DB's reliability and dependability enables the O3 System to operate around the clock, enabling NEC to increase manufacturing capacity to meet growing market demand.

Emerson

The Challenge : Sometimes hard data demands hard proof. A major Industrial Automation ISV challenged Objectivity to a rigorous test under conditions that would expose any weaknesses or overstatements of Objectivity/DB’s prowess.

The plan was to not only see what Objectivity/DB could do, but how its results would compare to a leading, specialized historian database product, in a controlled, representative environment – an apples-to-apples test of Objectivity/DB against an incumbent that was specialized for the task at hand.

For the throw down, Objectivity/DB was provided with real historian information, and asked to run the benchmark with both static (pre-defined) schema and dynamic schema (defined with Objectivity Active Schema), all using equipment equivalent to that used by the other product.

The Objectivity/DB Winning Result:
There’s nothing like letting someone else do the bragging for you. In this vendor’s challenge, even on lesser hardware, Objectivity/DB blasted past the performance of the specialized tool. While the other product hit a peak performance benchmark of 890,000 values per second on a dual core processor, Objectivity/DB roared in at 2,159,000 values per second on a single core processor.

Peak Performance (in values per second):
  • Other product    890,000 on a dual core processor
  • Objectivity/DB    2,159,000 on a single core processor

Several variations were tested -- static schema/single thread; static schema/multithread; dynamic schema/single thread; dynamic schema/multithread – and Objectivity/DB’s superior capabilities for ingest speed outperformed the competition in every instance.

Objectivity/DB also proved its compatibility with SQL/ODBC queries and tools, and Objectivity/SQL++ and ODBC adaptors were shown to work seamlessly with the ingested objects. (Incidentally, Objectivity/SQL++ now automatically takes advantage of Objectivity/DB associations (relationships) if they are present, completely eliminating any JOIN processing.

OBJECTIVITY/DB PLATFORM UNIQUELY SATISFIES INTEGRATION PROGRAM

L-3 Integrates US Navy’s Cooperative Engagement Capability and the US Air Force’s Network Centric Collaborative Targeting Systems

Objectivity/DB is the integration platform that L-3 is using for the U.S. Air Force’s Network Centric Collaborative Targeting (NCCT) system and the U.S. Navy’s Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC) system. Objectivity/DB is the real-time and scalable “data fusion” repository that monitors, analyzes, responds and reports on all platforms and assets such as aircraft, etc., uniquely satisfying the real time data management requirements for the NCCT system. This integration program is part of the U.S. Navy’s Trident Warrior exercise series, involving an Expeditionary Strike Group, U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army aircraft, as well as coalition aircraft.

Network-centric Warfare System

The U.S. Air Force’s NCCT is an open network-centric architecture and software design that horizontally integrates airborne and ground assets to detect, locate, track and target ground targets. Through machine-tomachine exchanges, NCCT supports time-sensitive and prioritized targeting operations more efficiently, accurately and quickly. CEC is the U.S. Navy’s premier network-centric warfare system, which shares radar data between participants to precisely track airborne targets, providing combat identification on airborne tracks and engagement-quality information to all participants. CEC is fielded on several E-2 aircraft, cruisers, destroyers, amphibious ships and aircraft carriers.

Reducing Target Acquisition Time by 90%

The Objectivity/DB is at the heart of the NCCT Fusion Engine (NFE) supporting the NCCT application. Objectivity/DB is storing and managing vast amounts of disparate information performing data fusion from geospatial and sensor data from the NCCT sensor network. Objectivity/DB provides a reliable, scalable repository for the wide range of complex data types found in this type of mission-critical application. The Objectivity platform is highly optimized for performance and throughput in systems that handle highly interconnected data. Objectivity/DB’s distributed processing system architecture, with no single point of failure, provides the robustness necessary for this application. Objectivity/DB handles all aspects of interoperability, including language, operating system, file system, networking and hardware dependencies.

As part of the NCCT concept, all participating platforms and ground stations cannot only exchange data, they can also collaborate to coherently collect and create new information that would otherwise go unreported by traditional “stove piped” platforms that do not easily share and disseminate information.

“By efficiently netting and synchronizing sensors in realtime and combining detections, it is possible to increase the probability of detecting and identifying a target, while also reducing the time it takes to accurately locate targets by more than 90%,” according to Gary Davis, director of the NCCT program for L-3 ComCept. “This refined information updates a common, shared network Objectivity database so that the problem of multiple reports on a single target is dramatically reduced.”

NORTEL

Click here to download the Nortel Success Story (PDF)

The Challenge:
Nortel, the largest supplier of telecommunications equipment in North America, was building a telecommunications system to be used by the Sprint PCS cell phone network. Their key DBMS requirements included:

Performance -- The performance of the base station managers (BSM) is important to managing an adequate number of base transceiver sites (BTS). Higher performance allows for more cell sites to be managed by a single BSM.

Time to Market -- Base station management software availability is a critical factor in gaining market share in this market, as wireless service providers build out their infrastructure.

The Objectivity/DB Solution:
Nortel enlisted the Qualcomm CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technology, which is built on the power of Objectivity/DB. With these cutting-edge partners, Nortel was able to extend the system and customize it as needed, something that would be extremely difficult in (O)RDBMS technology.

The Challenge:
A world leader in telecommunications, serving hundreds of telecommunications clients around the globe, Ericsson was developing ETNA (the Ericsson Transport Network Architecture), offering an integrated transport infrastructure for all telecommunications services.

ETNA had to include all transport network technologies including PDH (Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy), SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) and WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing), under the control of a single, integrated, unified management platform.

The Objectivity/DB Solution:
The ETNA OSS is the integrated, unified management system that can control all transport equipment within the ETNA product portfolio. The ETNA OSS uses Objectivity/DB to provide storage of the network-related data.

Objectivity/DB allows ETNA OSS to provide a number of well documented interfaces based on international standards such as TMN, and gives it the flexibility for high scalability and distributed management configurations.

"A transport network must work as a single, coordinated entity, even though it may include many hundreds or thousands of network elements of various types," says Richard Winfield, Director of Marketing at Ericsson business unit Transport & Cable Networks. "Combining the building blocks to produce the network solution that's right for customer needs is of prime importance to Ericsson. We selected Objectivity/DB because of its scalability, performance and reliability," he adds.

The Challenge:
No other market reacts as sensitively to small changes as the financial market. No other workplace is as dependent on rapid access and quick reaction to data. So in developing Hicom Trading E, a new generation of trading systems for banks, brokers, and Siemens Private Communications Systems Group needed the most accurate and fastest DBMS available.

Hicom Trading E would be designed for multimedia and the particularly demanding requirements of this rapidly changing market. Stability, rapid connections, distributed architecture, decentralization and scalability were among the top must-have elements of its functionality.

The Objectivity/DB Solution:
With a list of requirements like Siemens’, no other DBMS can compare to Objectivity/DB. By incorporating the leading-edge performance of Objectivity/DB, Hicom Trading E can be expanded to an international network of workplaces by switched and fixed connections.

The client-server architecture enables global, network-wide administration in real time. Decentralized distribution of several system managers allows data management to proceed according to the "daylight principle": in other words, after business closes in Singapore, Frankfurt takes over, and then New York when Frankfurt shuts down

"We selected Objectivity/DB as the object-oriented database management system because it is a product which has proven itself both in the telecommunication industry and within Siemens," says Peter Giese, business unit manager of Hicom Trading Systems.

And according to Thomas Abeln, head of the System Manager Development Group at Siemens Schweiz AG in Zurich, Switzerland, "We conducted intensive benchmarks before reaching a decision. We selected the Objectivity database because it is a very stable system with high-performance and a modern architecture. In developing applications, we didn't have to worry about the locations of the database server because of Objectivity's capability for transparent distribution of data and its flexible, configurable, data replication option. We were therefore able to save about 3 man-months of programming expenses with Objectivity."

The Challenge:
Qualcomm is a true innovator, creating various wireless cellular standards for telecommunications. To capitalize on a burgeoning market, Qualcomm needed a DBMS that would allow its Intelligent Base Station Controller (IBSC) to manage hundreds of cells and the corresponding transmitter sites.

Because one true fault can precipitate many apparent faults, real-time fault analysis was also a critical component of the system. Qualcomm’s choice of database would have deep impacts in its real-time fault analysis.

The Objectivity/DB Solution:
Qualcomm turned to Objectivity/DB while it was developing Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), a breakthrough standard in digital wireless telephone communications which improved voice quality and increased capacity by as much as 20 times.

Qualcomm used Objectivity/DB as the foundation of the management information base [MIB] for its CDMA Intelligent Base Station Controller, in part because of the ability of Objectivity/DB to specify objects cleanly, according to necessary telecommunications protocols. Objectivity/DB was also singled out for its ability to guarantee non-stop operation.

The Challenge:
The target is better obstetrical care, including reduced Cesareans, fewer critical situations and better handling of those situations, resulting in healthier, happier mothers and children. The tool is the Computer Assisted Labor Monitoring (CALM) system from LMS Medical. It provides real-time, multi-access monitoring for obstetrical care units, allowing doctors and nurses to keep informed of a patient’s moment-by-moment progress wherever they are -- at bedside, at a nurse's station, from a doctor's office, or other remote facilities. And more than monitoring, CALM permits comprehensive management and analysis of patient information, as well as decision support capabilities.

The Objectivity/DB Solution:
LMS chose Objectivity/DB above other ODBMSs and RDBMSs for a variety of critical advantages. With Objectivity/DB, LMS could get to market faster, with less training or performance tuning. LMS had confidence in the reliability and performance that Objectivity/DB has proven in so many industries and applications.

CALM was the first clinical information system based on object oriented technology, and is unique in its ability to store information about the patient and care received as an object model, rather than decomposing and mapping it to the old fashioned tables of previous generation relational database systems.

"Mapping information on patients and all that happens to them during their stay in a hospital, including treatments, observations and data collected from electronic monitors, to relational database tables means a lot of the richness of the information must be left out," according to Salim Ramji vice president of technology for LMS. "The Objectivity database enables us to capture comprehensive patient information and provides us with unlimited scalability for the future."

Objectivity/DB’s inherent stability, reliability and performance are vouched for by the FDA’s approval of the CALM system. "FDA approval for CALM is a significant milestone that demonstrates Objectivity/DB is the safe choice for medical instrumentation developers," says David Caplan, president and CEO of Objectivity.
